Background of the study
Vaccine hesitancy has emerged as a significant public health challenge globally, with community responses playing a critical role in addressing it. In Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, varying degrees of vaccine acceptance and refusal have been observed due to misinformation, cultural beliefs, and distrust in health institutions (Ike, 2023). Community-driven initiatives, including education campaigns and local outreach programs, have been implemented to counteract hesitancy and improve vaccination rates. Recent research indicates that effective community engagement can lead to increased vaccine uptake and better public health outcomes (Ngozi, 2024). However, persistent gaps in communication and education continue to fuel hesitancy, necessitating a comprehensive analysis of community responses and interventions (Chinwe, 2025). This study investigates the dynamics of vaccine hesitancy and examines how community-based strategies are shaping public attitudes towards immunization.

Statement of the problem
Despite ongoing efforts to promote vaccination in Bende, vaccine hesitancy remains a barrier to achieving optimal immunization coverage. Misconceptions, distrust in health authorities, and cultural factors contribute to resistance among some community members. These issues lead to lower vaccination rates and increased vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases. Addressing vaccine hesitancy is imperative for improving public health outcomes, and a deeper understanding of community responses is necessary to design more effective interventions (Ike, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the extent of vaccine hesitancy in the community.

  2. To identify the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy.

  3. To recommend effective community-based interventions to enhance vaccine uptake.

Research questions:

  1. What is the level of vaccine hesitancy in Bende Local Government Area?

  2. What factors contribute most significantly to vaccine hesitancy?

  3. How can community responses be optimized to increase vaccination rates?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Misinformation significantly contributes to vaccine hesitancy.

  2. Cultural beliefs play a major role in shaping vaccine attitudes.

  3. Community-based education programs can improve vaccine uptake.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines community responses to vaccine hesitancy, providing data essential for designing targeted interventions. The insights will help health authorities enhance vaccination campaigns and public trust (Ike, 2023; Ngozi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to evaluating community responses to vaccine hesitancy in Bende Local Government Area, focusing solely on local cultural, social, and educational factors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Vaccine Hesitancy: Reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite availability.

  • Community Response: Collective actions and attitudes of community members.

  • Immunization Coverage: The proportion of the population that has received vaccinations.
